Sheryl Crow took the stage at The Murat Theater for the first time since being
diagnosed with breast cancer; a rescheduled date from earlier this spring which
was postponed so she could undergo treatment.
The 44 year old Sheryl Crow, a prior elementary school music teacher, is an
eight-time Grammy winning American blues rock singer, guitarist, bassist and
songwriter. Her debut album, Tuesday Night Music Club, featured "Leaving
Las Vegas" and "All I Wanna Do" which became blanketed radio
hits in the spring of 1994. The singles "Run, Baby, Run" and "Strong
Enough" followed with the same success. Crow received multiple Grammy awards
in 1994: Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for "All I Wanna Do", Record
of the Year for "All I Wanna Do" and Best New Artist. The album itself
sold over 6 million copies.
In 1996 Crow released her self-titled second album that got her on the cover
of Rolling Stone. The album’s material is deeper than ‘having fun’
as her material covered politics, abortion, homelessness, and nuclear war. The
debut single "If It Makes You Happy" became a hit and produced two
Grammy awards for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance and Best Rock Album. Sheryl
produced the album herself to quell the critic’s belief that she was a
one-hit wonder. In 1998 Crow released a third album, The Globe Sessions, which
she later called therapy after going through a bout with depression and a high
profile relationship with Eric Clapton. The debut single, "My Favorite
Mistake," was rumored to be about Clapton although she denies the claim.
The album won Best Rock Album at the 1998 Grammy Awards and was subsequently
re-released in 1999 with a bonus track, Crow's cover of the Guns N' Roses song
"Sweet Child O' Mine." "There Goes the Neighborhood" won
a Grammy for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance in 2000 when it was included
in her album, "Sheryl Crow and Friends: Live from Central Park."

In 2002, C'mon, C'mon was released which fell squarely in the pop category.
Marketing her sex appeal, Crow proved that women over 40 are sexy. "Soak
Up the Sun" was all over radio and “Steve McQueen” won her
yet another Female Rock Performance Grammy. Proving that she’s no Wallflower,
she appeared in a shirt that read "I don't believe in your war, Mr. Bush!"
during a performance on Good Morning America and followed-up her feelings with
a statement explaining WHY on her website.
But her relationship with Lance Armstrong got almost as much press as
her music. Crow met Armstrong at a cycling event in October of 2003 and they
began dating shortly thereafter and announced their engagement in September
of 2005. After appearing on Oprah however, they announced their break-up in
a joint statement issued on February 3, 2006: "After much thought and consideration
we have made a very tough decision to break up. We both have a deep love and
respect for each other and we ask that everyone respect our privacy during this
very difficult time."
Her latest album Wildflower was released in September 2005. Although the album
debuted at #2, it wasn’t received as well as her prior releases. However,
the album was nominated for a Best Pop Vocal Album Grammy Award and again she
was nominated for a Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance Grammy Award
for the first single "Good Is Good." Crow was diagnosed with early-stage
breast cancer in late February 2006 and fortunately is expected to make a full
recovery. Sheryl’s latest effort can be heard this summer in a movie theater
near you, as she contributed to the opening track to the soundtrack for Disney/Pixar's
animated film Cars, "Real Gone."
