Jay-Z Kicks Off Day One of Coachella - Live Photos

Massive crowds swarmed the main stage at Coachella to hear Jay-Z at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, CA. Without question, Jay-Z is on top of the charts AND on top of the world. Smiling from ear to ear, he knocked out the audience with hits “Run This Town, “99 Problems” and “Hard Knock Life.” Jovial Jay-Z shouted-out to other Coachella bands (specifically to Yeasayer) and encouraged fans to compensate every act performing.

But it was Jay-Z’s wife Beyonce who polished off the already off-the-map performance when she left her perch from side stage and joined her husband in a duet of "Forever Young." Clearly, both pros respect each other’s talents as they smiled widely at each other throughout the song. Afterward, Jay-Z bowed and tipped his imaginary hat to her with obvious love and respect." I know we gotta get out of here, but I don’t want to leave yet," Jay-Z lamented. But all good things must come to an end and the monster hip-hop rapper closed his set with “Encore.”

As this three-day marathon enters its second decade, there’s been buzz about it returning to the early mystical vibe of its youth.   2010 Coachella appears to be truer to the roots of the festival with a stronger more diverse lineup than others that promoter Goldenvoice has presented in prior years.

The entire three day lineup is magical and magnetic and the talent is stacked wide and deep into three days.   Headlining Coachella this year is hip-hop’s Jay-Z, along with English art-rock trio Muse and Gorillaz, the futuristic cartoon hit-makers fronted by Damon Albarn of the Blur.  But Coachella isn’t all about the headliners…there’s plenty of artists to enjoy across multiple stages.

DAY 1 MUSICPIX HIGHLIGHTS:  Jay-Z, Street Sweeper Social Club, The Specials, Imogen Heap, Calle 13, Echo & the Bunnymen,  P.O.S., She & Him, Alana Grace and Deer Tick.
