Ask anyone who attended this year’s Rock on the Range festival about their favorite act away from the main stage, and a resounding consensus would place Airbourne at the top of the list. Their explosive Sunday afternoon set on the Kicker stage blew us away. With nearly choreographed headbanging, perfectly timed theatrics, and wild vocals reminiscent of the great 80’s rockers, Airborne stole the show and set the bar for side stage acts at any music festival. With only 30 minutes to prove themselves, they managed to create as much buzz as any main stage performer by playing hits like “Too Much Too Young Too Fast” and “Runnin’ Wild.”

The band hails from Australia, and has easily identifiable musical influences such as AC/DC and Motorhead. Brothers Joel and Ryan O’Keeffe formed the band in 2003 with guitarist David Roads and bassist Justin Street. Their Ready to Rock EP (2004) lead to a record deal with Capitol Records, and their follow up Runnin’ Wild (2007) cemented their status and even featured a playable Guitar Hero track (“Too Much Too Young Too Fast”). Though dropped from their record deal, they were picked up by Roadrunner Records and are on tour this summer promoting the release of their latest album No Guts No Glory which debuted in the US on April 20th.

Circa Survive - Live in Chicago - Live Photos - Tour Schedule
Congress Theater | Chicago, IL | 05/14/10
Circa Survive, currently on tour with Coheed and Cambria and Torche, came through Chicago last Friday for a date at the Congress Theater. If the event didn’t sell out at the door then it was close. Fans packed the balcony and poured into the floor, sandwiching themselves against the barricades. The intensity even caused a break in Circa Survive’s set so that security could readjust the failing defenses.

Large panel mirrors lined the back of the stage allowing the many crowd surfers to catch a glance of themselves sailing across a sea of hands attached to bodies singing in chorus below. The strobe lights mimicked the frantic dancing of vocalist Anthony Green who stopped only briefly between songs to catch a breath and address the crowd. Circa Survive successfully got the crowd on their feet, in the music, pumped, and ready for Coheed and Cambria to close out the night.
Circa Survive is out supporting their latest release, “Blue Sky Noise”, which can be previewed on the band’s website at http://www.circasurvive.com. The group is also slated to play this year’s Bonnaroo festival in June.

Them Crooked Vultures Live in Indianapolis - Live Photos - Tour Schedule
Egyptian Room at Old National Center | Indianapolis, IN | 05/17/10
Them Crooked Vultures stunned a sold-out the Egyptian Room at Old National Centre in Indianapolis, with an AS GOOD AS IT GETS performance. Comprised of three mega-musicians, this part-time super group are not stupid birds. Legendary Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones, Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters and Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme are profoundly musically intelligent as anyone within earshot can attest. This trio of pros circled and delivered a musically precise and mind-altering performance.

For 90-minutes-plus, Them Crooked Vultures hypnotized the audience with hauntingly scary rock n roll unpredictability. Every song in the set was a roller-coaster surprise as the Vultures twisted and turned melodies and rhythms upside-down and sideways supported by lyrics that only a rock star could write.

Three very different musicians collectively make very different music. Drummer Dave Grohl is a caffeine-induced Tasmanian devil behind the drum kit. An obvious house favorite simply because it’s not every day that Rock Royalty comes to town, John Paul Jones was a one-man orchestra playing bass, keytar, organ, mandolin and violin. A set ‘wow moment’ came with "No One Loves Me (Neither Do I)" proving a reminiscent Led Zeppelin vibe. "Gunman" and "Scumbag Blues" highlighted the bands skill-set with Homme and Jones locked into a downright spookiness fueled by Grohl’s indescribable pounding. Mr. Grohl is a sight and sound in-and-of himself! Although not ordained an official Vulture, Alain Johannes’ is an incredibly gifted and supreme guitarist. But of course, these three guys wouldn’t have selected a rookie to soar on their tour.
Sadly, Them Crooked Vultures have only one more US date before they fly to Europe but keep watch on your radar as this sonic storm should not be missed.

Avenged Sevenfold Unleash Highly Anticipated New Single, “Nightmare,” to Radio on Monday, May 17th
Marketwire | Burbank, CA | 05/14/10
Southern California’s Avenged Sevenfold will release their explosive new single, “Nightmare,” to radio on Monday, May 17th. The track, which will be available from all digital service providers the following day, is the first single from the band’s upcoming fifth studio album, which was produced by Mike Elizondo (Dr. Dre, Eminem) and mixed by noted engineer Andy Wallace. The album is due for release this summer on Warner Bros. Records.
Avenged Sevenfold achieved worldwide success with their platinum 2005 breakthrough City Of Evil. The album featured the wildly popular single “Bat Country.” The band quickly became known for their spectacular live shows and continues to sell out arenas worldwide. They are the only band to have headlined the Vans Warped Tour and Ozzfest while simultaneously hitting #1 on MTV’s TRL.
In 2006, they won the award for fan-voted Best New Artist category for “Bat Country” at the MTV Video Music Awards. In 2007, their self-titled album Avenged Sevenfold debuted at #1 on the Billboard Alternative, Hard, and Rock Charts and #4 on the Billboard Top 200 album chart. It spawned the singles “Almost Easy,” “Afterlife,” and “Scream,” and has sold over a million units worldwide. In 2008, the band captured their magnificent stage show on Live in the LBC & Diamonds in the Rough, a live CD/DVD that has since been certified platinum. Over the years, Avenged Sevenfold has built a fanatical fanbase that includes more than one million fans on Facebook. They have also attracted 93 million plays on MySpace.
In August, Avenged Sevenfold will set out co-headlining the first annual Rockstar Energy Drink UPROAR Festival with Disturbed. Also on the bill are Stone Sour, Halestorm, and Hell Yeah. The UPROAR tour, which will hit amphitheatres and arenas, marks the band’s first tour since the passing of beloved friend and drummer Jimmy “The Rev” Sullivan.
